Why does a state university require private funding?
State funding no longer provides the support necessary for PSU to serve Oregon well; it now represents less than 20 percent of the University's budget. Portland State University relies on tuition, competitive grants, and private support for the remainder. Philanthropic investments, in particular, provide funding for PSU's edge of excellence, required for the University to keep pace with the growing needs of our community.

Why should my gift be directed to the PSU Foundation?
The Foundation is PSU's preferred recipient of private gifts because the Foundation was established specifically to provide the accounting, data management, correspondence, and donor services appropriate to charitable contributions. Funds received by the Foundation on behalf of the University are efficiently channeled to the use specified by donors.

What is the relationship between Portland State University Foundation and Portland State University?
The Portland State University Foundation is an independent, tax-exempt organization. Its mission is to promote and further the development of Portland State University by raising, managing, and disbursing private funds for University programs. Gifts to the Foundation advance PSU by providing scholarships for outstanding students, supporting faculty research and instruction, and enhancing facilities and program development and growth. Is my gift tax deductible?

Can I designate my gift?
Unrestricted gifts give the University the greatest flexibility in allocating funds where they are most needed. You may, however, restrict your contribution to one of the specific needs of the University's schools or colleges for scholarships, faculty enhancements, and program support.
